Donald McLeod (Loyalist)

Donald McLeod was a Scottish military officer serving under the Kingdom of Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War.

Biography

McLeod was dispatched to the Americas, where he fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. A year later, Donald MacDonald was ordered to rally Loyalist support for the British cause. McLeod took over when McDonald, eighty, fell ill, fighting at the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge. Leading the highlanders with their broadswords, McLeod was killed when volleys of grapeshot raked the Loyalist ranks. He was alleged to be hit by 20 musket balls.
